Visiting IMM 2020 - the world's leading furniture fair.

  • Yearly in Cologne, Germany. Since 1949.

  • Over 1000 exhibitors.

  • Focus is contemporary furniture and interior design.

  • Sustainability was a leading topic.

  • The highlight “Das Haus” has been designed by the Spanish designer team MUT.

Working on the small island Mallorca means to be limited in many aspects of our professional life. The number and variety of suppliers, colleagues, collaborators or types of marketplaces is quite easy to overview.

The same applies to inspiration. Mallorca is a very international and “urban” place and well connected, so we have international influence and impressions - but physically we do not get to see new products or designs before they are well established in the commercial market.

This means: when we create, things always start from OUR point of view, possibilities, ethical convictions and physical possibilities. On the one hand this has evident advantages. On the other hand, we enjoy some input from time to time as well. So we went to the IMM in Germany for the first time and surely it was worth a visit!

Certainly we focussed on woodwork.

The most remarkable impression was:

the conscious consumer behavior and ecological

footprint in the furniture market were the main

topic.

Apart from “our” topic - sustainability in solid wood - we visited the big players (of curiosity on how they appear - perfect as expected, but we did not discover appealing news) and Spanish brands (Innovative, well presented and designed - generally in Spain the market is expected to grow).

The most important Spanish exhibitors designed “Das Haus”: an annual walk-in home simulation and fair booth installation conceived by some of the most promising designers of the day. In 2020 it was MUT Design from Valencia, showing their idea of blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space.
