Chestnut wood in furniture making.
Chestnut is of the same family as oak, and likewise its wood contains many tannins. This renders the wood very durable.
Chestnut timber is decorative. Light brown in color, it is sometimes confused with oak wood. The two woods' textures are similar.
The correct timber selection is key and needs some experience to avoid using weak or defect wood.
Spain is producer of sweet chestnut timber.
As our values and convictions include sustainable acting wherever possible, we started to look into alternatives for tropical and imported wood.
The most beautiful and versatile wood type we investigated in is definitely chestnut wood from Spain.
It is out of fashion and not easy to get, but formerly it has been highly valued for small outdoor furniture pieces, fencing or cladding (shingles) for covering buildings (for which durability is an important factor).
In Italy, chestnut is also used to make barrels used for aging balsamic vinegar and some alcoholic beverages, such as whisky or lambic beer.
We buy from a sawmill that focuses on sustainable forestry, located in the North of Spain. But chestnut is commercially not well introduced. We have to face limited availability and sometimes difficulties with stock or quality, but couldn´t think our furniture series SinFin without it’s outstanding beauty.
